The "world's kite capital" is getting ready to welcome hundreds of officials and business delegates from the Republic of Korea and Japan to a grand industry expo that will be held in the city this autumn.

The China-Japan-ROK Industries Expo, due to run from Sept 23 to 25 in Weifang, is expected to boost trilateral trade to new heights, as visitors take in not only the city's renowned kite art, but also its machinery manufacturing, modern agriculture and high-tech industries.

Director of the organizing committee Zhang Zengshun said he believes the expo will continue to stand firmly alongside the country's other outstanding industry  events.

"The scale, profile, influence and quality of the expo will profoundly impress visitors," Song Yuelin, deputy director of the organizing committee, said confidently.

"Attendance at the expo is on a strictly invitation-only basis, as we want to ensure the quality of exhibitors and exhibitions," he added.

He raised an example as last year - 2,120 companies had registered to exhibit, and 579 have been invited by the organizers. Companies from Japan and the ROK accounted for 57.3 percent of all exhibitors.

Insiders noted that Chinese industry standards require at least 20 percent of an expo's exhibitors to be foreign for the event to qualify as an international one.

The number of exhibitors from ROK and Japan alone mean that Weifang's event has exceeded that number by almost threefold.

It is expected that 20,000 purchasers and suppliers will attend the expo, and it is thought that the total number of visitors will hit 100,000.

Many Fortune 500 companies, will also take part in the event in a city that, despite its small size of 16,100 square kilometers and population of only 9.28 million, punches well above its weight.

In addition, hundreds of VIP guests from Japan and ROK and domestic provincial- level leader shave confirmed their attendance.

Last year, a total of 47 projects were signed during the event with combined capital of 37.6 billion yuan ($6.16 billion). Among those projects, the investment was 32 billion yuan. The figures for this year's expo are expected to go even higher.

The government places high emphasis on the expo, as it boosts both the infrastructure and investment climate of the city. "We believe the event will accelerate the city's opening-up and development," Zhang said.

Throughout the expo, flights will be operated through Weifang Airport to Osaka in Japan and Incheon in the ROK, offering easy access to visitors.

High-level exhibitions on intelligent electronic information, energy saving, environmental protection, modern agriculture, food safety, healthcare and senior citizen's care and creative culture sectors will be held.

Influential figures from government and industry will take part in forums on China-ROK-Japan trade cooperation, round tables, and will hold brainstorming sessions on furthering and improving trilateral trade cooperation.

Weifang's trade and investment with Japan

Weifang's trade with Japan hit $2.03 billion last year, accounting for 10.7 percent of the city's total trade volume.

Weifang's main exports to Japan are textiles, clothing, agricultural and chemical productsS and electronic machinery.

Japan's main exports to Weifang are electronic machinery, wood pulp, chemical fibers andplastics.

Japan has invested in 514 projects in Weifang, and their combined contractual investment value reached $1.65 billion by the end of last year.

The major sectors for investments are agricultural products and food processing, chemical products, paper-making and textiles.

Thirteen Weifang companies have invested in Japan with contractual value reaching $317 million by the end of last year.

Their investments cover two research and development centers and 11 sales network projects.

Weifang's trade and investment with the ROK

Weifang's trade with the Republic of Korea hit $1.08 billion last year, accounting for 6.1 percent of the city's total.

Weifang's exports to the ROK include agricultural and chemical products, machinery, textiles and clothing.

The ROK's exports to Weifang include plastics, machinery and high-tech products.

The ROK has invested in 847 projects in Weifang with contractual value reaching $3.26 billion by the end of last year.

The major sectors for investment include chemical raw materials, products, textiles and clothing.

Weifang had invested in 13 projects with contractual value reaching $593.6 million in the ROK by the end of last year.

The investments cover two R& D centers, 10 sales network projects and two processing projects.
